Sedation Dentistry Q & A

How can sedation dentistry improve my dental experience?

Dental phobias are very real. For some people, the fear or anxiety of visiting the dentist is overwhelming and can prevent them from getting the dental care they need.

Even if you don’t suffer from a debilitating dental phobia, having certain procedures performed can be an uncomfortable and stressful experience.

With sedation dentistry, your Advanced Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry dentist can minimize those feelings of anxiety or discomfort by using medical sedatives to keep you relaxed.

By calming your worries, sedation dentistry can help your dentsit provide your mouth with the care it needs and can make your trip to the dentist more enjoyable.

What are some of the sedative options you offer?

Some of the sedatives Advanced Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry uses to enhance your dental experience include:

Laughing gas

Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, is one of the oldest forms of sedation dentistry. It’s a gas that you inhale through a flexible plastic mask placed over your nose. You wear the mask throughout your entire procedure as it delivers an odorless gas that temporarily puts you in a state of deep relaxation.

Laughing gas even gives some patients the giggles, hence the name. After your dentist finishes your treatment, she pumps pure oxygen through the mask, which flushes the nitrous oxide from your system. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off very quickly, and you’ll feel back to normal by the time you leave the office.

Conscious oral sedation

With conscious oral sedation, your Advanced Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry dentist prescribes you an anti-anxiety pill to take before you arrive at the office. The pill minimizes activity in the area of your brain that causes feelings of anxiety or fear, leaving you in a relaxed state for your treatment.

As the name implies, conscious oral sedation leaves you awake, so you’ll still be able to communicate with your dentist if necessary.

Is sedation dentistry right for me?
