Crowns and Bridges Q & A

What are crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges are fixed dental appliances that restore your teeth to their natural shape, size, and strength. They provide protection and durability for your oral health if you have damaged or decayed teeth.

While they share similar purposes, crowns and bridges have a few key differences:

Crowns

A crown is a protective cover for a tooth. It’s made from materials like porcelain, metal, or a combination.

Bridges

A bridge fills the empty gap left by one or more missing teeth. It connects the space by attaching to the healthy teeth on either side, which act as support. Crowns cap the supporting teeth, and the false tooth (or teeth) in the middle stays securely in place. This placement helps you chew and speak more comfortably while keeping your smile complete and natural.

Should I consider crowns and bridges?

Your Advanced Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry dentist may recommend crowns and bridges if you have:

  • Damaged or weakened teeth needing extra support
  • Large fillings weakening your teeth’s natural structure
  • Severely decayed or worn down teeth
  • One or more teeth missing
  • Misshapen or yellow teeth
  • Difficulty chewing or speaking due to missing or damaged teeth

A crown can also protect a vulnerable tooth after a root canal, sealing out bacteria that could lead to reinfection.

What happens when getting crowns and bridges?

When you get a crown or bridge, your dentist examines your teeth and takes digital X-rays to get a clear picture of your oral health. They reshape the affected tooth by removing part of its structure to make space for the crown or bridge. After reshaping, they take a mold of your teeth to create a custom fit.

Next, they place a temporary crown or bridge to protect the area while your permanent one is made. During your final appointment, your dentist removes the temporary piece and secures the permanent crown or bridge in place using dental cement. The process restores your ability to chew, speak, and smile confidently.

Damaged and decayed teeth don’t just threaten your oral health. They can lead to pain and infections that affect your whole body. If you want to protect your health and restore your smile, call Advanced Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry or schedule an appointment online today.
