Root Canals Q & A

What are root canals?

Root canals are a type of endodontic therapy designed to treat infected or inflamed tooth pulp. The pulp is the soft center of a tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. It is crucial for growth and sensitivity to temperature, but it is not essential for the tooth's long-term health.

If you experience a cavity or sustain an injury to your mouth, root canal therapy can prevent further complications and allow you to keep your natural tooth for years.

Root canals can address issues with damaged or decayed tooth pulp. Common causes of pulp damage include:

  • Deep decay from an untreated cavity
  • A chipped or cracked tooth
  • Multiple dental procedures on the same tooth
  • Trauma from sports, work, or accidents

If you notice pain in one or more teeth or if your surrounding gums feel red, warm, or sensitive, contact Advanced Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry immediately.

What should you expect during a root canal?

Root canals are performed as a quick outpatient procedure at our office. Upon arrival, your dentist will administer a local anesthetic for your comfort. They will then create an access hole in the affected tooth to gently remove the infected or inflamed pulp.

After cleaning the tooth's interior with an antiseptic solution, your dentist will fill the space with gutta-percha, a soft, rubbery material. They will also take impressions of your tooth to send to a lab, where a custom dental crown will be created.

About a week later, you will return to Advanced Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry for a follow-up. Your specialist will check the healing progress and then place your crown over the treated tooth, securing it with dental cement. You'll leave with a beautifully restored smile.

What is the recovery after a root canal?

After your root canal, it's normal to experience mild swelling and some sensitivity. It's advisable to avoid chewing on the treated tooth and to take over-the-counter pain relief if needed.

For the first couple of days, stick to soft foods like scrambled eggs, soup, or mashed potatoes. You can brush and floss your teeth but do so gently.
